O2 offers one of the most widely used NHS discount schemes in the UK mobile market. Through its O2 Open programme, NHS healthcare workers can claim up to 25% off the airtime element of a pay monthly contract, with no requirement for a Blue Light Card subscription and no annual renewal fee.
This page covers exactly how the O2 Open scheme works, what it saves, who qualifies, and the small print worth knowing before signing up.
O2 Open is an employee discount programme that applies a monthly reduction to the airtime portion of an O2 Refresh contract. It is not a one-off cashback or a short introductory rate. The discount runs for the full duration of the minimum term.
The discount is tiered based on the data allowance in the chosen plan. Airtime plans with 3GB or more of monthly data qualify for 25% off. Plans with less than 3GB qualify for 15% off. Since most pay monthly contracts in 2026 carry well above 3GB, the 25% rate applies to the majority of NHS staff who use the scheme.
The reduction applies to the airtime plan only, not the device repayment. O2 Refresh contracts split the monthly bill into two separate components: a device plan covering the cost of the handset, and an airtime plan covering minutes, texts, and data. The 25% NHS discount comes off the airtime portion alone.
On a monthly airtime plan of £20, a 25% discount saves £5 a month, adding up to £120 over a 24-month contract. On a £30 airtime plan, the saving is £7.50 a month, or £180 over two years.
| Monthly airtime cost | Discount (25%) | Monthly saving | 24-month saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| £15 | 25% | £3.75 | £90 |
| £20 | 25% | £5.00 | £120 |
| £25 | 25% | £6.25 | £150 |
| £30 | 25% | £7.50 | £180 |
The airtime portion of the bill is listed separately in the contract details on the O2 website, making it straightforward to calculate the exact saving before committing.
The O2 Open scheme is open to NHS staff, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and administrative and support staff working for NHS trusts. It also covers teachers, Sainsbury's employees, and staff from a range of other participating employers.
Verification requires one of the following: a valid NHS trust email address, a recent payslip, or a national insurance number alongside employment confirmation. Blue Light Card membership is not required, which removes the £4.99 two-year subscription cost that some other discount routes involve.
Emergency services workers, including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics employed outside the NHS, are better placed to access O2 discounts through the Blue Light Card route, where pricing is applied automatically when clicking through from a Blue Light Card account.
The process must be completed within 28 days of starting an O2 Refresh contract. The discount cannot be added retrospectively beyond this window, so it is worth completing verification promptly after purchase.
First, purchase a pay monthly phone or tablet directly from O2, either online at o2.co.uk or in an O2 store, on an O2 Refresh contract. The scheme does not apply to contracts bought through third-party retailers, SIM-only deals, Pay As You Go, or business accounts.
Second, text the word OPEN followed by the employer name to 61202. O2 will reply with the five-character employer code. For NHS staff, the standard code is NHS01, though texting the trust name or variations such as "NHS", "health service", or "health trust" can confirm the correct code for a specific employer.
Third, visit the O2 Open portal and sign in using the My O2 username and password created at purchase. Enter the employer code and verify NHS employment using one of the accepted forms of ID. Verification can take up to three working days.
The discount appears from the second month's bill onwards and continues for the duration of the minimum term.
A few exclusions are worth knowing in advance. The discount does not apply to SIM-only contracts, Pay As You Go plans, business accounts, sharer plans, or Apple Watch airtime plans. It also cannot be combined with other airtime discounts or promotional offers. If the chosen O2 Refresh plan includes six months of free airtime as part of a promotional deal, the NHS discount cannot be applied to that same plan.
The device repayment component of the monthly bill is never discounted under O2 Open. Only the airtime portion is reduced.
O2 Refresh contracts split the device cost and the airtime plan into two separate agreements. The practical benefit for NHS staff is that the handset can be upgraded mid-contract without paying early termination fees on the airtime plan, since the two elements are independent.
For shift workers or anyone whose phone is likely to be replaced before the end of a standard 24-month term, this flexibility has real value. Upgrading the device restarts the device plan but leaves the discounted airtime plan unaffected.
All O2 pay monthly customers, including NHS staff using O2 Open, have access to the O2 Priority app. This provides 48-hour presale access to event tickets across the UK, regular dining discounts, and exclusive experiences at O2 venues including priority entry and free cloakroom access.
The Priority app runs separately from the O2 Open discount and is available at no extra cost to all pay monthly customers.
The O2 Open discount is one of the most straightforward NHS perks available, but it is not automatically the cheapest route to a new phone. Standard promotional deals from other networks, or non-discounted O2 plans paired with a Blue Light Compare search, can sometimes produce a lower total cost than the NHS-discounted rate on a higher base plan.
The most reliable approach is to calculate the total cost of the O2 deal with the 25% discount applied across the full contract term, then compare it against the best available deal on Blue Light Compare before signing. SIM-only plans are also worth checking for anyone happy to buy a handset separately, since the NHS airtime discount applies equally to SIM-only contracts on eligible O2 plans.
O2 stocks a wide range of handsets including the iPhone 17e, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, all of which are eligible for the O2 Open discount when purchased on an O2 Refresh contract directly from O2.
Discount terms and eligible plans are subject to change. Always verify the current offer at o2.co.uk/open before purchasing.
